WKFM Unity Move in Kashmir

London, U.K. June 22, 2008. Dr. Ghulam N. Mir, President, World Kashmir Freedom Movement (WKFM) has stated that the Governing Council of WKFM expresses its great pleasure with the long-overdue reconciliation between the two factions of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference. The Council acknowledges the desire to forge a unified front in demanding the right of self-determination for fourteen million citizens of Jammu and Kashmir. This initiative must immediately be followed by seeking cooperation of other major pro-freedom groups and leaders including Mohammad Yasin Malik, Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front.

We are pleased to note that the statement categorically reaffirms to India, Pakistan and the World community that no solution contrary to the wishes and aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir shall be imposed upon them. Rather, their wishes and aspirations as to be determined in accordance with the principles of self-determination as enshrined in the United Nations Security Council resolutions that were accepted by the world community. The Governing Council wholeheartedly supports this belated move and expects the leadership to work sincerely and tirelessly in the unification process.

The Kashmir issue cannot be wished away. It demands an immediate attention to establish the process leading to a peaceful resolution. Kashmiri sacrifices - physical, mental and economic - cannot be erased from the memory or history. The unity initiative will catalyze the freedom struggle. We expect the leadership to set an example and create an organization that will command the respect of the Nation and the World.

Mistakes of the past must not be repeated if we must redeem our nation. A single, consistent policy must emerge from the collective leadership that is without dependence or appeasement. Whatever course the organization may choose in consultation with the People of Kashmir, it must be taken in the broader interest of the Nation without any temptation for individual or party gains. Each step taken, no matter how small, must be a step that brings the nation one step closer to its long cherished goal of self-determination.
