The Ramadhan Foundation offers President Elect Barack Obama our warm congratulations on his stunning election as President of the United States. The strong statements from many world leaders is a clear sign that the world has been waiting for change from an Administration that has focused on carrying out illegal wars, promote torture and disregarding international law.
What makes President Elect Obama's victory the more unique and historic is because for many centuries Black people have been enslaved and oppressed and this has been a shameful legacy for the United States. For many decades recently the fight for Civil rights led by Martin Luther King and Malcolm X has been fought for a moment when Black people can be recognised as equal, that moment has finally come.
Mr. Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Foundation comments:
"I am pleased and delighted to offer President Elect Obama and the American people my warmest congratulations and best wishes on his historic election victory. As President Elect Obama has said the road ahead will be difficult but the American people have voted for change and the world shares their delight at the end of the Bush administration.
We need to see an end to the occupation in Iraq, stop torture and close Guantanamo Bay, respect the sovereignty of independent nations, respect human rights and end this aggressive foreign policy – the world is watching and waiting.
That debate will start in the coming months but today we offer our best wishes to President Elect Obama and join in reflecting on the magnificent and historic achievement he has made."
