Comment on SMS Tax in Pakistan

Government of Pakistan imposed 20paisa tax on each SMS in budget 2009-10, which is till not accepted by any Telecome Company. In my opinion this SMS tax is imposed by government to stop negative propaganda about government. I think government can not stop this by imposing this tax but it will affect revenue of Telecom Companies.
I would like to as you opinion about following, please post your opinion in post comments. Thanks

What are your opinion on Tax on Mobile SMS in Pakistan?
Are you in favor of this tax?
Why government imposed this tax?
Is this tax acceptable by you?

Dear

We should not crticize every thing of government. I think government has the right to do the decisions. this is is democracy if they do wrong decisions they will be defeated in next election. You should start a blog about the Electricity theft by Mushaarf, Soomro, Nadeem Taj in their farm houses. which is in billions? who will gave them punishment??

I am not in favor of this tax and govt should not impossed such taxes which are going to pass over to consumers.. We should have a freedom to express our views and if govt will do good work we will all apreceate their positive work and Govt will not face any negative propoganda.
This tax is not acceptable by any means.

its not just expressing the views only, its like they are trying to stop the technology enhancements, they don't want people to use technology.
VOIP is banned, SMS is banned, internet is expensive, electricity is not present...

In the USA you have to pay for the SMS and other extra features. Why not in Pakistan?
Mostly people are using SMS for unnecessary purpose. If you have extra time to send the sms then go and do some positive work. If you have extra money which Is you father Income then ofcourse pay 20 paisa and send SMS you want.

Just think, what is the purpose of the SMS? Are we using the way we should use? Your Sister, Daughters and your brothers are using positively?
Yes some people are using for the good purpose but how many are those? Only few right ?
Mostly people using the Mobile phone in the Pakistan majority of them don’t have any job. Why ? if you want Mobile phone then go and do work make money and then buy the phone.

Q: What are your opinion on Tax on Mobile SMS in Pakistan?

A: I think that this tax is not good and the government should impose this tax on mobile. As many poor people use SMS for cheap messaging. However, if government still want to collect this tax, then it should charge this tax on SMSs only if more than 500 SMSs send per mobile.

Q: Are you in favor of this tax?

A: I am niether in favour of this nor against it. However, I think government should not charge SMS tax on mobile, which send less then 500 SMSs per month.

Q: Why government imposed this tax?

A: Not only me, but many of us know personally, that SMSs are main source of flirting, dating and many other useless purposes. Similarly, businesses also using SMSs for advertisement. If there would be no SMS tax, then advertisement would go un-taxed. There may be many other reasons of this tax, which you and I may not know. Overall, government has always more access to information and resources than us. So it is always a better approach to let government do what they are suppose to do.

Q: Is this tax acceptable by you?

A: Yes, Ofcouse. The main reason is that government of Pakistan imposed this tax. So, there is no question of not accepting the tax imposed by the government. However, like many of you. I think, according the best of my information and learnings, that government should re-consider this tax and impose tax, if necessary, to more than 100 SMSs atleast. Or where, more than 10 SMSs sent in one go. But, still, whatever government will impose, will be acceptable to me.

Thanks.

Saj

We SHOULD criticize whatever we wish to, about the actions of the government! That is what democracy means. Democracy works through aggressive, active and continued participation of the citizens.
Next, imposing a 200% tax on sms service is exploitation and a disservice that the present government of Pakistan is doing to its citizens. A government is supposed to make laws FOR the convenience of the citizens and NOT to make their daily lives even more difficult than what they already are.
Three shouts of Shame & Shame & Shame for the PPP government for tax-exploitation. I'm not voting for them again.

Mr. whoever, the government can't allow voip straightaway to the nuts like you. SMSs are not banned, Internet is more than 1000% cheaper than the past, However, only electricity is expensive. But still better compare it with any other so called developed country. Pakistanis pays 60 Re. per letre for patrol. UKians pay 1 GBP. Which one is cheaper?

Thanks.

well ...for all those ppl out there who think govt should impose this tax coz ppl use sms for flirting ,dating etc...so ppl ...those who want to flirt are going to do it anyways....whether the govt imposes tax or not...the only ones affected are those who use it as a means of communication with their friends and relatives nationwide and abroad...and as for teh govt..we wud have been more than happy to pay tax if we were also receiving any benefit out of it..wch in our case..is totally absurd...and 4 those who'r comparing pak wid US or any other economy..if tehy're paying taxes they're also receiving heaps of other benefits...while we...none..n watever tax we're paying..goes straight in the personal pockets rather than nation's..so this tax is totally ridiculously unreasonable and does NOT deserve to be implemented.

This is the most stupid Tax, maybe Zardari felt that lot of hate messages were being text.

We the consumers or the Users of the Cell phones pay 21% tax up front when we load a card, so why this additional tax?

Do not forget, Shaukat Tarin is also a product of Citi Bank, he has his controls elsewhere.

Then a banker is a good accountant only, he is not an economist what would he know of the economy?

Can we find someone who has a benevolent approach to our problems?

Tax on SMSs can be imposed on marketing or business but should not on personlal SMSs. Hopefully All telecom companies ignore this kind of Govt tax imposing thing

Well I am in favor of this tax. So much of spam sms keep coming daily that we tend to miss the real important ones. Plus if a facility is given to someone it shouldn't mean that one starts misuing it. Loads of Loads of dirty jokes are passed each day. They spread like wildfire. I came to a point that I said enough is enough. They started becoming a pain in the ......./ . People don't understand the difference between others rights and their moral obligations. They mix them together and make it their rightful moral obligation to send those tonnes of dirty stuff to every contact in their phones daily thus making others either to just delete them without reading or just cursing them. The govt. took the right step although I know they didnot have a slightest clue of the problem people had started to face. They just imposed it because they found this commodity up and running so they decided this is lucrative business. Impose tax! Such pity!!!

Now that;s another bullshit... keh govt imposed tax just becoz to stop negative propaganda against govt... Although i am not a supporter of this govt but I pose a neutral opinion... and I hope Journalist also pose a neutral opinion...

From Govt Propective... It is obvious ke the SMS usage in Pakistan is very much high, as for me, my sms counter reached more than 600,000 Sent sms and 1,150,000 Received sms in 2 yrs... that was my usage when i was in khi... so imposing a tax on such thing will generate a huge revenue...

From User point of veiw... that;s very bad... Extremely wrong... becoz user have to pay 20 paisa per sms more... I think 5 Paisa Tax would have been acceptable... but 20 Paisa on a 1 Rs service is very high...

Regards

government has imposed tax to generate revenue from Pakistani people. 20 paisa per sms would yield millionsof rupees foe govt.

Like carbon tx, where they would be earnign around 121 million if it would get accpeted

This is right decision of the government of Pakistan to impose tax on sms, because peoples are misusing the tax free sms.

Tax, tax, tax.... I don't know how many type of taxes the people of Pakistan have to pay and in return you know what you get....??? Generally, there should not be many type of taxes. Instead of imposing multiple no. of taxes the present govt. should control on overheads and extra expenses incurring by traveling abroad with flock of colleagues, spending money for luxurious hotel stays, limousines, mujras and throwing money.

It is not fair.
No I am not in favour.
Govt imposed tax just to meet their lavish requirements by sucking money from public.
This is of course not acceptable by anyone.

those who say that they get unwanted sms'es everyday..i wonder y they distribute their number so commonly amng ppl...if u just keepur num restricted to ur family n close frnds these things wont bother u..n true that the govt will generate revenue..but where is all the'revenue' going??ab tk to jo revenue collect kia us se kuch b country k liye use nahi hua...it all 4 their personal use...n this govt..the most corrupt in the history is trying to get as much money out of ppl as they can..by fair or unfair means...they dont deserve to b the part of the cabinet..shame on thm.

Not everybody is using SMS service to misuse in the terms of society. But you cant save you genertaion (specially to A worried father) of the spoiling epidemic of the era. I'm sure they must have been one in your era. It's also the most convenient way to communicate in many useful ways.
I believe the cell phone and telecom companies are already charnging so much in many ways. Even te customer services of companies like UFONE is paid. I dont see any reason to feel positive towards new gov't policy to impose 20% more tax.
