Pakistan offensive against Taleban: The Final Nail

OPINION
By Sameera Aziz (Guest Post)

The supporters of the now-defunct peace deal between the Pakistan government and the Taleban in the Swat region have been proved wrong. Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani finally decided to call the armed forces for eliminating the militants and terrorists who have forcibly occupied part of the country’s northwest, created chaos and have sent thousands of civilians fleeing from the region.

Indeed, the government has tried its best to reconcile and resolve the matter in a peaceful manner but unfortunately, it was dealing with the people who are secretively working for some anti-national external forces. There was no other way to deal with the bigheaded and arrogant militants except the surgical operation. The most unfortunate thing is that some people wrongly believed the extremists’ version of the Shariah which has been rejected and disproved by all clerics with one voice.

Awami National Party (ANP) has a parallel government in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). It sponsored the failed peace deal with the Taleban. Now, it has also admitted that the government has taken the proper action and that extremist leaders have proven to be hypocrites by rejecting repeated government concessions.

The supporters of the peace deal were giving reasons that since the outside forces were sabotaging the accord, it should be made successful. Moreover, many people were supporting the peace accord because of their anti-American sentiment. Their views have seen military operations wax and wane in recent months. Militants have been carrying out suicide attacks and blasts across Pakistan, raising alarm about government stability and strength.

Even if outside forces wanted to sabotage the peace deal, one should understand that Pakistan military is fighting to save the country’s own writ which has been challenged by the extremist Taleban.

They are the puppet of Pakistan’s enemies under the name of their own version of religion. They broke the peace accord by moving to Buner, Dir, Malakand and other places. They did not deserve to be dealt by peace accord as they are combatants and criminals from the other provinces of the country who have been hired and grouped by the enemies of the country to break Pakistan and showing it as a failed state. This is the reason they always wear a veil to avoid recognition.

Indeed, the majority of the people in Pakistan never cared about the US disliking the peace accord, but they were irritated and annoyed when the extremists’ Taleban violated the deal. It was certainly the right time for the Pakistani government to crush them before it was too late.

The first defeat of the extremist Taleban was obvious when thousands of local people migrated from Swat and Buner to safer places instead of supporting the militants by becoming human shields. The extremist Taleban who are responsible for converting the peace deal into a ‘panic deal’ were themselves in panic for losing local support. Many fleeing residents have been stopped by the militants’ barricades. Now this is the global responsibility to look after the war displaced. They have sacrificed their home and hearth not only to save their own lives but, to save the future of Pakistan and subsequently, the future of the world by not cooperating with the militants.

This is the first time that masses as well as the political parties in Pakistan are condemning the militant Taleban with a loud and single voice. It is certainly a big challenge for the military to fight these worms of extremism and terror who are equipped with the same standard of weapons like the military except the helicopters and jets.

We should not expect that the operation will be over and done within a few days.

Unfortunately, collateral damage must be accepted as a consequence of this surgical operation. However, the prime minister has allocated $13 million to assist people fleeing the area, in addition to assistance that is coming from the UN refugee agency and other charities. Camps have been set up in safe areas near the conflict zones. - SG
